Kumiko Buller loves the immediate, vibrant and permanent nature of pastel, and has recently begun exploring with charcoal. For her, expressing the presence or soul of her subjects is everything.
Inspired by her father, Makoto Ueki's drawings of her as a baby, Buller studied oil with Ron Sherr, whose portraits of President George Bush, Sr. and Jr. are well known, and pastel with Harvey Dinnerstein, a legendary instructor at the Arts Students League in NYC.
Originally from Japan, Buller is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America. She has exhibited widely and is a recipient of the Mortimer E Freehof Memorial Award, The Art Spirit Foundation Gold Medal Award, and a Windson Newton Award.
