Music Workshop with Mbira Master Musekiwa Chingodza

Master teacher Musekiwa Chingodza is considered one of the greatest living mbira (thumb piano) musicians. He was a key member of the band Panjea, and composed their hit song “Ganda”.

Come to his workshop to learn a traditional Shona song from his homeland of Zimbabwe.

Beginners are welcome.

Instruments available

Adults: $20, Students & Children $10

To register for the workshop email: norabalaban@gmail.com

Following the workshop Chingodza will play his only 2016 Westchester performance.

Mbira is one of the most soulful sounds on the African continent. Originally used in spiritual ceremonies, the iron-pronged mbira produces music beautiful enough to attract spirits and rhythmically charged enough to keep people dancing through all-night ceremonies.

OPENING RECEPTION: LANDSCAPE IS A VERB & SURF NYC

LANDSCAPE IS A VERB: BETSY WEIS

SURF NYC: ANDREEA WATERS

SATURDAY, MAY 21ST, 2016

6.00PM - 9.00PM

Landscape is a Verb

Weis photographs nature, looking for a view and a perspective that pulls her in deeply. In this way, she connects to a place through the process of taking pictures.  In the studio she develops her images, working in the space between what she observes and what she feels, what is perceived and desired, what is chosen and realized, between the action and the reaction; this intervening space can be calmly intellectual or suffused with emotion.

Surf NYC

Waters, Originally from Bucharest, Romania, discovered Rockaway Beach, NY, where her surf photography began, in spring 2012. There was an energy that spoke to her that day, an energy that sparked a love affair between her lens, the surfers and the ocean. Andreea's photographs capture the mood, atmosphere and art of surfing. She puts herself in the elements without reservation. When you least expect it she is on the beach, taking powerful and authentic photographs that represent timeless moments in New York surfing.  As a photographer she chases the light; the surfer chases the ride. When all the variables line up, they share a perfect, fleeting moment.

Closing Event for David Joseph & john manzi

Final opportunity to view photographic artists john manzi & David Joseph's current shows at SQUARE PEG GALLERY.  Both shows will travel to Rafius Fane Gallery in Boston's SOWA district in 2016.

Worlds Within Worlds

john manzi's photographs of objects in nature challenge the eye to explore the possibility of more; of the effect of moving to a different facet of the diamond through which we peer.

They open us to an emotional awareness of things, which, though usually missed, exists.  And, once glimpsed, spontaneously evokes a very real visceral, emotional reaction.

Morning Joe

David Joseph has always been searching for different ways to capture the beauty of the everyday object, and then communicate that beauty to others.  A few years ago he began to document the abandoned coffee cups that he found casually discarded on the streets of Manhatttan.

With the Morning Joe series, Joseph challenges you to reconsider what you see everyday, questioning what is trash and what is beauty, or can something be both?
